Former US President on Plant-Based Diet by Dr. Esselstyn

On Sun. evening, August 28, 2011, CNN ran a television special titled “The Last Heart Attack”, hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta, during which he interviewed former President Bill Clinton. In that interview, Clinton, who during his presidency was noted for a junk food diet of hamburgers, barbeque, and doughnuts, revealed that he had adopted a vegan diet.

change after learning that animal fat clogs arteries and shuts off blood flow to the heart and brain. is that it prevents people from having clogged arteries, high blood pressure, stents, by-passes, heart attacks, and strokes. In a previous interview on CNN, dated September 22, 2010, Clinton had the following to say as to the reason he adopted a vegan diet:

“I did it because after I had this stent put in, I realized that even though it happens quite often that after bypass surgery you lose the veins
because they’re thinner and weaker than arteries, the truth is that it clogged up, which means that the cholesterol was still causing buildup in my vein that was part of my bypass.

I didn’t want it to happen again. So I did all this research and it says that 82% of the people since 1986 who have gone on a plant-based,
no dairy, no meat of any kind — I eat very little fish — 82% of the people who have done that have begun to heal themselves. Their arterial blockage cleans up; the calcium deposit around their heart breaks up.

This movement has been led by Doctor Caldwell B. Esselstyn at the Cleveland Clinic, Dean Ornish out in California, the doctors Campbell,
father and son who wrote The China Study, and a handful of others. But we now have 25 years of evidence. So I thought… I’ll become part of this experiment. I’ll see if I can become one of those who can have a self-clearing mechanism.”

Today, after adopting a 100% plant-base diet, Clinton says he is slimmer than he has been in decades (has dropped more than 24 pounds), has more energy, and is healthier than ever. Clinton is now at his high school weight. To duplicate Bill Clinton's success, you need to do as Clinton did: stop consuming all animal source foods if you wish to escape a long list of physical problems – including but not limited to clogged arteries, high blood pressure, stents, by-passes, heart attacks, and strokes.

It’s not just people Clinton’s age that need to make these important improvements.

Compelling evidence shows that the atherosclerotic process (buildup of fatty plaque in arteries) begins in childhood and progresses slowly into adulthood. Then it often leads to coronary heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States.

During the Vietnam War, autopsies on soldiers who died on the battlefield revealed many had a 50% blockage while 6 out of 94 soldiers had so much plaque buildup that 75% to 90% of an artery was blocked.

Arteries carry blood to and from the heart and into capillaries. Exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste material takes place across capillary
walls. The interior of arteries should be smooth and unobstructed, but as one ages, if they consume a diet high in animal fat, a sticky substance commonly called plaque can develop and build up on the interior arterial walls. This plaque is comprised of fatty acids, calcium, and fibrous connective tissue.

Where Does All Of This Fat and Plaque Come From?

Friend, that buildup of fat and plaque in the arteries doesn’t just appear out of nowhere — it comes from what a person eats and drinks!
People may blame genes, but the culprit is clearly diet.

In other words, the curse of the narrowing of those arteries by that fat and plaque buildup had a CAUSE – wrong diet.

Sadly, in today’s society, we do not seek the CAUSE of high blood pressure or that fat and plaque buildup, but rather deal exclusively with the symptom.

There is GOOD news!

In most instances, you can eliminate the need for high blood pressure medicine, stents, and bypass surgery by simply taking
personal control and changing what you eat and drink. Stop putting the animal fat into your body and the body will immediately set about removing that fat and plaque buildup on its own and without a doctor’s help.

Do Drugs, Stents, and Bypasses Fix The Problem?

Does the drug correct the cause of the high blood pressure? Does it prevent the continued build-up of fat on the arterial wall? No way! Nor do bypass surgery or stents correct the problem more than temporarily. If those who have these types of surgeries continue to consume animal products, they will usually have additional need for stents or bypasses as the buildup continues — which can ultimately lead to a fatal heart attack or stroke. Over time, this fat combines with inorganic minerals found in synthetic supplements and tap water, hardening the fat that lines the arterial walls. The result is arterial plaque.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, PhD, Cornell University, author of The China Study had the following to say on pages 130-132 of his book:

In the seminal paper regarding the landmark Lifestyle Heart Trial, the authors, Dr. Ornish and his scientific colleagues, write: ‘The point of our study was to determine what is true, not what is practicable.’

“We now know what is true: a whole food, plant-based diet can prevent and treat heart disease, saving hundreds of thousands of Americans every year. . . . Now is the time of great hope and challenge, a time when people can control their health. . . .”

Bill Clinton on A Plant Based Diet

(NaturalNews) Bill Clinton this week probably did more for the vegan lifestyle than any other single event in the history of dietary controversies. When the former president announced that he has adopted a vegan diet, news media picked up the story with TV specials and coverage over the Internet and YouTube

Of course, Bill's motivation is to prevent recurrences of his previous heart problems, and more heart surgeries. He has adopted the diet programs of the vegetarian proponents Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn in hopes of actually reversing his heart disease. Ornish's program of a vegetarian diet, exercise, and meditation has been proven in studies to remove plaque in artery walls.

This brings up the controversies and uncertainties about the best diet to prevent disease. On one hand are the vegetarians with their theory that a plant-based diet prevents and treats heart disease and cancer. Their argument is that cultures where eating meat is the norm have more of these diseases, which are relatively unknown in vegetarian cultures. However, the science to back up this argument, presented in books like The China Study, has been criticized as less than convincing. Nonetheless, the reasoning that raising large mammals for food is not sustainable or healthy for the planet seems cogent. And the conventional meat industry is clearly a horrific nightmare, as presented in several recent documentary films.

On the other side are the Paleolithic diet promoters who assure us that the human body was designed to eat meat and plants in the form of fruits and vegetables, but not grains. Some cultures also have historically included dairy. Their contention is that a high protein and low carbohydrate diet will prevent diabetes and the various forms of inflammation that contribute to chronic disease. Limiting or eliminating starches and grains is the key to staying fit and lean. Then there is the Weston A Price (Nourishing Traditions) diet that advocates plenty of healthy fats, especially saturated fats and animal products, along with fruits, vegetables, fermented foods, and some soaked grains.

There are some areas where both sides agree. Highly processed foods are not good for you. Eating whole foods as close as possible to their state in nature is best. Corn syrup is terrible. Everyone should stay away from artificial sweeteners, flavors, and colors, and chemicals and preservatives derived from petroleum products. Organic produce is best because pesticides and antibiotics are associated with various disease processes, and because organic produce has more vitamins and antioxidants. Animal products, if consumed at all, should be organic, and the animals raised in healthy and humane conditions, i.e. cage-free birds and grass-fed cattle.
Many studies have shown the benefits of eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables, for example the Mediterranean diet studies. Limiting junk food and fried food has also been shown to reduce disease. Controlling weight, building muscle and reducing body fat prevent heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Obesity is a guarantee that inflammation and chronic disease will strike sooner or later.

Different diets may be more suitable for different folks. Generally, anyone who is immersed in these controversies is probably eating a better diet than most of the population. It is hard to imagine Americans giving up hamburgers and fries altogether, but it is clear that a lifestyle that includes organic eating, exercise, and good health habits is a growing and welcome trend.

If Bill Clinton can shed unwanted pounds and overcome a lifetime of poor food choices, then so can the rest of us.

Simple formula to beat heart disease, cancers & most other illnesses & diseases.

A lot of the YouTubes, Forks Over Knives along with a growing number of others about changing one's diet & Dr. Esselston ( Bill Clinton & now CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta) are more about a diet for people with heart disease, but the principle is the same ---- people need to clean up their diets, quit eating red meat, over chemicalized foods & eat organic fruits & veggies so as to rid our bodies of all the processed foods, chemicals, preservatives, hormones, Drugs, etc. & give our immune systems a chance to work as they were intended to fight off cancer & other illnesses & diseases. Overworked Immune Sytems fighting off excess chemicals is a MAJOR problem in America

. The big difference in heart diets & cancer diets is that the #1 thing cancer of any kind feeds off of is sugar----NO sugar of any kind is allowed for cancer issues.
It wasn't a FUN diet for Don Porter, but it sure beat the alternative!
